Copper 5 Cent Nickels
The five cent piece or ‘Nickel’ or we refer to it, began in 1866 with the Shield Nickel variety. All five cent pieces, with the exception of 1942 to1945, are actually 75% copper and 25% nickel. Nickel is a very hard metal this has resulted in numerous striking problems, especially in the early years.
